Are You in an Unhealthy Relationship?

“Love is a many-splendored thing.”

When starting a relationship,  the goal of the two involved is to experience happiness and bliss, right?  I don’t think any one goes into a relationship aiming for failure or charting a course towards disaster.  Falling in love and being in love makes you light as a feather. You have the feeling that nothing in the world could ever be wrong.  You’re hopeful.  And it’s a beautiful thing.

So why and how is it that so many people end up in an unhealthy relationship? Certainly they do not plan for this.  I wonder do they even see it coming?  Well as they say, love is blind.  Or, is it that we put blinders on at the expense of our well being?

An unhealthy relationship could very well have started that way – unhealthy.  And it could have started as a healthy relationship but due to neglect, lack of nurturing, and just plain change – it became unhealthy.

Many of us have experienced this at some point in our lives.  We’ve read about it.  We’ve witnessed our friends and family members go through it. We may have even given advice to others about what to do.  But when we find that we’re it – that we’re the ones living with and trudging through an unhealthy relationship – we ask this question: “how did I end up here?”

There are many warning signs of an unhealthy relationship.  And I will share them with you.  But first I think we should start with preventive measures.  You see, I believe it would be great if we could put some things into play that would help to prevent us from having an unhealthy relationship.  There are some skills that we can use.  There are some actions that we can take.  There is a way to shift our focus. And all of these can be prophylactic measures to avoid the disappointment that an unhealthy relationship brings.
